designboom in collaboration with LEXUS present the LEXUS DESIGN AWARD 2019.
LEXUS created the LEXUS DESIGN AWARD, an international design competition that targets up-and-coming creators from around the world. The award seeks to foster the growth of ideas that contribute to society by supporting designers and creators whose works can help to shape a better future. It provides a unique opportunity for six finalists to work with globally recognized designers as mentors to create prototypes of their designs, and then exhibit them at one of the design calendar's most important events. The award seeks entries from around the world and opens the call for entries for the 7th competition on (Thu) Aug 9, 2018. LEXUS launched in 1989 with a flagship sedan and a guest experience that helped define the premium automotive industry. In 1998, Lexus introduced the luxury crossover category with the launch of the LEXUS RX. The luxury hybrid sales leader, LEXUS delivered the world’s first luxury hybrid and has since sold over 1 million hybrid vehicles. A global luxury automotive brand with an unwavering commitment to bold, uncompromising design, exceptional craftsmanship, and exhilarating performance, LEXUS has developed its lineup to meet the needs of the next generation of global luxury guests, and is currently available in over 90 countries worldwide. DOES THE DESIGN DEMONSTRATE NEW THINKING AND ORIGINALITY IN ITS PROPOSAL AND EXECUTION?
CAPTIVATE
IS THE DESIGN INTRIGUING AND COMPELLING WHEN REALIZED IN CONCEPT AND EXECUTION?
CATEGORY: No limit for design category- architecture, product design, fashion, engineering
PARTICIPATION: Open to professionals, students and design enthusiasts from every country in the world and only to individuals who have reached the age of majority. Free registration.
PRIZE
1) Invitation to Milan Design Week to exhibit your WORK at the LEXUS Event. 2) Prototype Production Cost Assistance up to 3 million JPY 3) Mentorship in New York City 4) PR assistance by providing Award Press Kit and Award Certificate
6 (six) Prototype Finalists will be invited to New York to receive advice from various acknowledged professionals as Mentors to develop a prototype of his/her submitted Work. LEXUS will cover the prototype production costs up to 3 million JPY (*includes tax). Prototypes are to be produced between January and March 2019.
In addition, the 6 (six) Finalists will be invited to Milan Design Week and the prototypes will be exhibited at LEXUS Event.
*Note: Only one person per entry is invited, regardless of individual or group submission.

Finalist Screening Session
The Judges gather together, judge the shortlisted works and determine of the candidates.
End of DEC 2018
Determination of Finalists
6 (six) Finalists will be determined.
Mid of JAN 2019
Finalist Announcement and Mentorship in New York City
6 (six) Finalists will be announced on LEXUS DESIGN AWARD Website.
6 (six) Finalists are invited to New York City for the Mentorship to receive advice from the Mentors.
JAN - MAR 2019
Prototype Production
Two and a half months' time to make and refine the prototype. Mentors will follow up and give advice.
APR 2019
Grand-Prix Selection/Prize Giving Ceremony in Milan
Prototype exhibition at the Milan Design Week Lexus Event. The Grand Prix Winner will be selected among the Finalists.
JUDGES
The Judges will select 6 (six) Finalists from the Entries received.
MENTORS
To provide to the selected 6 (six) Finalists advice on their design pertaining to improving their design, engineering and marketing the product at the Mentorship in New York City.
To give advice to each candidate on how to improve their project during prototype production.

Teams should register with one name only - when submitting Works, you should add all team member’s names.

Submit your Work / Works
There is no limit on the number of entries per person. If you are entering more than one Work, please submit each Work separately. Images and text must be in digital format.
a. Images
The Work may be produced in any medium but must be submitted as low res JPEG (JPG) or GIF format.
1 main image is mandatory, and 6 additional images are optional.
1 photo of physical object or 1 image of exhibition plan is mandatory.
Up to 8 images can be uploaded (either single or composition images).
All digital image files must be
1. 500 KB or smaller (a low-res version of your original Work).
2. The width must be from 800~1000 pixels / 72 dpi,
3. RGB color mode.
Video of concept or prototype in action (optional)
The voluntary addition of up to 2 video files can be uploaded as either vimeo or youtube format. The link of each video should be pasted in the proper field of the submission form.
b. Description
Please provide a brief description of your design.
Let us know about your research and point out the artistic and technological qualities. You should also consider a broad spectrum of issues that demonstrate and showcase the ways in which your design can enrich people's lives. Please explain how you plan to further develop the work. Tells us about it.
c. Confirmation of the Competition Guidelines and Official Rules
Prior to submitting your Work(s), and you will be asked to agree to the Competition Guidelines. By clicking on the Submission upload button, you notify that you have read and understand the terms and conditions, AND BY PARTICIPATING IN THE CONTEST, YOU AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THE OFFICIAL RULES, WHICH CREATE A CONTRACT BETWEEN YOU AND LEXUS.
With regard to the submitted work, Toyota Motor Corporation, Lexus International, designboom and its affiliates shall assume no responsibility whatsoever.

The application period of the LEXUS DESIGN AWARD 2019 is from August 9, 2018 at 9:00 (CET), and qualifying Submissions must be received by October 28, 2018, 23:59 (CET)
ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE RESULT
6 (six) Finalists will be chosen by the middle of December 2018 and notified by email (only to the Finalists, unless extended deadline).
Please note that only the shortlisted applicants will be notified.
The Finalists will be announced on Lexus official website in mid- January 2019.
